WHY?
Hey Side Huster,
I get this question quite a bit: why car washes? Is that your passion?
My response: lol no
Don’t get me wrong I really like the business, but in general I just LOVE BUSINESS. I love starting and building businesses. The WHAT is not as important as the WHERE, HOW, WHO and WHEN to me.
This is one way millions of people screw up the ‘follow your passion’ trope. They think you need a maniacal obsession with your industry to make it.
WRONG.
First off, most people aren’t passionate about anything but their family - and many struggle with that.
Second if everyone followed their passion there’d be 3000 bike, hobby, flower and dress shops in every town. In fact in many places these niches are completely saturated for this very reason. Following your true passion is a great way to enter super crowded industry. Millions, perhaps billions, of people share that passion with you.
Third, turning your passion into a business is a fantastic way to kill your passion for it. Three quarters of business is the ho-hum blocking and tackling that every business needs. You gonna feel the passion flowing through you when you’re fulfilling orders at 1am on a Tuesday?
All this is to say that you can be passionate about entrepreneurship and then apply that passion to many different niches. You should most definitely LIKE the industry, but don’t let the “I don’t love this” feeling deter you from a business.
You know what ignites a passion in most people? Getting a big fat paycheck on the reg. You’ll feel the love for that business then!
Which brings me to car washes and my “why”. I think its cool we’re doing a small part to clean up the world. We’re literally removing dirt, grease, and pollution from the world. But that’s pretty grandiose and frankly a little silly.
My why is building generational wealth for my family. The returns are so fantastic, and the operation so simply, that I LOVE this BUSINESS.
I can, instead of writing checks to the tax man, store money for my kids and future generations in a cash flowing asset. And the returns are eye-popping.
THAT lights a fire in me, and that’s why I love it. Building something cool, improving ugly properties, cleaning up our community in a small way, and then creating something that my kids will benefit from - now that’s something I can be passionate about. That’s my “why”.
So what’s yours?
