What do you DO??

I get this question from confused followers:

What do you actually…do?

It’s a great question because sometimes I have to ask it myself. 😅

But its kind of fun to break down how and where I spend my time with 7 companies.

Here’s the deal, I work a solid 40-50 hours a week:

  • I have 4 companies in the online space: 2 supplement co’s and 2 email newsletter co’s - more on this in a moment (35 hours a week)

  • I have an event company called Breakthrough that centers on mental health for entrepreneurs (not much happening with it at the moment)

  • I of course have the car washes, 2 sites, 1 more coming, all through one LLC (this newsletter you’re reading is nestled in that LLC - for now) (5 hours a week, more during dealmaking)

  • I invested in the dumpster endeavor (2 hours a week, less later)

My main focus is the online companies, and I manage the marketing. A typical day has me managing media buyers, copywriters, designers, and tracking all the results.

I also set the vision and the formulas for all our supplements. That means I spend a lot of time researching ingredients. I spend at least 4-5 hours a week on a site called PubMed looking at random control trials. ALL of our formulas have to be super effective, so we start with the science.

Pretty random for a Car Wash Guy right?

Then I also jump in with the newsletter businesses. Those businesses are basic media arbitrage: pay for a lead (email address) and engage that person enough for them to open emails and click on ads so that the whole things makes money. Much easier said than done.

Those companies will combine for about $15-17M top line this year.

But the lifeblood of both of those businesses is copywriting, so if someone were to ask me what I do at my core: it’s copywriting.

Then the car washes take about an hour a day on average. Tomorrow we have our biweekly breakfast meeting for an hour, then I’ll swing by one location. I’ll get a wash, look at issues with the wash (“that nozzle is clogged”) talk about signage. We discuss the weather a fair bit, it drives our business.

I also spend a couple hours a week creating and monitoring advertising through Google and some offline stuff like radio and billboards. And of course I’m always on the hunt for new car washes to buy.

When I’m really hungry, I can spend up to 10 hours a week hunting deals, and about that in due diligence and dealmaking when we’re under contract.

The online businesses will generate a nice upper-6 figure, almost 7 figure income for me personally. The car washes would give me an upper 5, low 6-figure income but I’m pouring it all back into more washes.

This creates a beautiful flywheel where I turn digital assets (which often don’t feel real) into hard assets.

And with it I owed exactly ZERO in taxes last year - this year if things go to plan I will have a massive (paper-only) loss that I will roll over into ‘24.

And of course I spend probably 2 hours a day on Twitter, which has taught me so much I can’t even fathom life without it.
